Carolina Satyr

In an open-wing posture, both males and females are mostly medium to dark brown, with no eyespots. In a ventral pose, both have two wavy brown lines running from the top of the forewing to the bottom of the hindwing. They likewise have dark eyespots on the outer edges of both wings. The male is smaller with more pronounced eyespots.
Size ranges from 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inches.
Habitat:
They are commonly seen in forest understory areas.
Ecology and behavior:
Larvae of the Carolina Satyr feed on a variety of grasses including Orchard Grass. Adults feed on tree sap and rotting fruit. Flight is weak and slow.
